Selling Your House To Live In A Motorhome With Four Cats
Some may say we are crazy, selling your house to downsize into a motorhome, and take four cats with you? Why would you do that? What if it doesn’t work? What if the cats hate it? So many questions that whirl around in your head when we decided to make this decision, especially when two years ago we tried to move to Portugal before brexit, we broke down on the way to the euro tunnel. Then we couldn’t get our van fixed in time and we never made it before the brexit deadline (that’s another story all together). After that, we’d had our fair share of bad luck and was too scared to take on the challenge again after everything going wrong the first time.
Two years later, and many healing months over coming this traumatic event, we decided to put our house back on the market, our house sold within a month. When the house sold, it became real again, and all the self sabotaging mindset came creeping back in, questioning and doubting the situation, wondering if it’s the right choice. We kept having to remind ourselves that our long term goal was to find some land and to create a little off grid peaceful life. We know it’s not easy but we were so fed up of the daily grind, our ever increasing bills and high out goings! Living in a built up area is just not for us, we prefer to be more connected to nature, away from the hustle and bustle.
So what next? Our house sold and we had moved out 3 months later. We had to arrange to stay with a relative whilst we hunted for a motorhome! This was not easy, because we knew the layout we wanted to ensure maximum space for us and four cats was just as important as what vehicle type we were going for and making sure it was mechanically sound! Everyday we were hunting for motorhomes, going to view up and and down the country, driving hundreds of miles! Luckily three weeks later we found the perfect one for us, it’s a classic Hymer, which is a huge 6.6 meters long and the biggest motorhome we could drive on a 3.5t license. We are currently waiting for a few cosmetic jobs to be done on the motorhome from the guy we are purchasing off and then we’ll be sprucing up the inside, and adapting for our cats.
So the crazy part, how are we going to manage with four cats in a motorhome? Well this is why the layout of our motorhome was so important for us! We wanted to ensure we have as much space as possible so the cats have room to move around, jump and still climb, as well as have space for adequate litter trays and food/water bowl areas! This is all completely new to us, and whilst we have found some useful information online, we still feel there is a lack of advice when it comes to travelling with multiple cats. Usually you see people share tips and tricks with just one or two, maybe three at a push! But not four.. What we did find reassuring was that a lot of people say cats do adapt very quickly if you can try and keep their routine as familiar as possible and that you make it as stress free as you possibly can!
Our cats are usually most happiest when they are with us, so we know that as long as we are with them, they will always remain calm and happy! We know this won’t be plain sailing and we are going to have some hiccups along the way, but this is why we want to share this journey, so we can offer other people advice and maybe give them the confidence to take the plunge!
Don’t feel like you’re limited to doing what you want to do just because you have pets, especially cats and because people don’t think it’s normal or acceptable to do this! You know your animals best and we can truly make anything possible if we just set aside the fear mindset and focus on what it is you want to achieve! Our cats are our priority and every decision we make is purely based on making sure they will be happy and we can make this enjoyable for them. We have had lots of negative comments from people, but here’s to proving them wrong, that we can make it work, and living in a motorhome is not a long term plan for us, finding our perfect piece of land is ..
